Reductions in soil water nitrate beneath a perennial grain crop compared to an annual crop rotation on sandy soil

چکیده
Nitrate ( NO3- -N) leaching into groundwater as a result of high nitrogen (N) fertilizer rates to annual crops presents human health risks and costs associated with water treatment. Leaching is particularly serious concern on sandy soils overlying porous bedrock. Intermediate wheatgrass (IWG) [ Thinopyrum intermedium (Host.) Barkw. & D.R. Dewey], perennial grass that being bred produce agronomically economically viable grain, which commercially available Kernza ® . low-input crop has the potential profitable grain biomass yields while reducing id="M2">NO3- -N compared common row rotations in Upper Midwest. Sulphate leaching in an organic crop rotation on sandy soil in Denmark
Sulphate leaching losses may reduce the long-term possibility of maintaining the S supply of crops in low input farming systems. Sulphate leaching and S balances were investigated in an organic dairy/crop rotation (barley [Hordeum vulgare] → grass-clover [Lolium perenne/Trifolium repens] → grass-clover → barley/pea [Pisum arvénse] → winter wheat [Tritucum aestivum] → fodder beet [Beta vulgaris]...
متن کاملCrop Rotation Impact on Soil Quality
Management systems influence soil quality over time. A study was carried out on Vanmeter farm of the Ohio State University South Centers at Piketon Ohio, USA to evaluate the impact of crop rotations on soil quality from 2002 to 2007. The crop rotations comprised of continuous corn (CC), corn-soybean (CS) and corn–soybean-wheat-cowpea (CSW). Ten soil cores were collected at 0-7.5, 7.5-15, 15-22....
متن کاملSoil and Water Management & Crop Nutrition
For the first few days after heavy rain or irrigations, water drains from the soil profile until its water content approaches a relatively stable value called the drained upper limit or field capacity. When plants have extracted all of the water available to them, the root zone water content approaches a lower limit of available water, or permanent wilting water content. The water held by the s...
متن کاملSoil water, soil chemical and crop variations in a clay soil
Spatial properties of field soils vary in a complex manner. Especially in arid and semiarid areas, this variability affects plant quality and crop production. An experimental field plot was extensively sampled regarding soil water (378 gravimetrical samples), soil chemical content (314 samples), and crop yield and chemical content (26 samples) at the Cherfech agricultural field research station...
متن کاملEffects of Soil and Crop Management Practices on Soil Quality
Developing the concept of soil quality may help identify the soil and crop management practices required for environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable agriculture. Objectives of this paper are (1) to review current efforts to define soil quality, (2) to discuss factors and processes which influence soil quality, (3) to identify, soil and crop management practices that affect proce...
